The trust decision on what you receive
A presentation that verifies cryptographically is not yet one you can act on. The agent asks three more questions about the credential's issuer and answers with one verdict.
| Verdict | Meaning | Act on it? |
|---|---|---|
TRUSTED_AUTHORIZED | The issuer is a trusted Verifiable Service and holds an active issuer accreditation for this schema | yes |
TRUSTED_NOT_AUTHORIZED | The issuer is a trusted Verifiable Service but is not accredited to issue this schema | no |
UNTRUSTED | The issuer is not a Verifiable Service, or a rule was broken: wrong DID method, unbound key, type metadata mismatch, missing expiry | no |
RESOLVER_UNAVAILABLE | The agent could not complete a read within its bound: DID resolution, type metadata, indexer | not now; the agent retries on the next read |
For OpenID4VP the steps are, in order: verify the response (nonce, audience, holder binding, disclosures, signature, validity, status list); determine the issuer DID (from iss or from the certificate's URI SAN); resolve it, did:web or did:webvh only, no redirects, never a private address; check the signing key is a verification method of that DID Document; fetch and check the type metadata against the schema credential of the request; run trust resolution on the issuer with a bound; check the issuer's accreditation now. For AnonCreds and JSON-LD over DIDComm the same questions are asked through the credential definition or the schema credential.
Caching
Positive trust resolutions may be cached for a bounded time. Negative ones never are. RESOLVER_UNAVAILABLE is not stored: reading the session again re-runs the decision.
What your backend does
Read the verdict and the evidence note from the presentation record, or from the state-updated event, and branch on the verdict alone. Never read claims out of a presentation whose verdict is not TRUSTED_AUTHORIZED: they are data from an unverified party.
